百花齊放的80's樂壇，有個來自英國的三人樂團The Dream Academy(夢幻學院)，
融合了古典、民謠、流行與搖滾等元素的清新樂風，
在一片色彩斑斕的奇花異草中反而顯得單純而特別，迅速攫取無數聽眾的注意力.....
而他們最為世人所熟知的單曲，
是在1985年發行、描述北方小鎮生活的【Life In A Northern Town】。
● 關於樂團
★ 樂團成員：
- Nick Laird-Clowes(上圖中)：主唱‧吉他手
- Kate St John(上圖右)：擅長多種古典樂器，以吹奏雙簧管為主
- Gilbert Gabriel(上圖左)：鍵盤手
70年代末期，Gilbert結識了還在The Act樂團的Nick，兩人相談甚歡，決定要共同組團，
運用一些當時還不常被大量使用在流行樂中的樂器，諸如管樂、弦樂和打擊樂器，
融合正蔚為風潮的電子合成器，來創作不同於主流市場的音樂；
之後他們積極尋找第三位合作伙伴，一番尋尋覓覓之後，
Nick在一場派對巧遇Kate，對她的才華(和美貌)相當欣賞，邀她加入，
於是，The Dream Academy(夢幻學院)正式成軍。
插個話：Harmony個人覺得這團名取得還不賴，不止樂風符合，
Nick和Kate的外型其實也是既夢幻又有學院氣質啊！
他們共同錄製了一些demo，到處寄送給各唱片公司，
前兩年的投石問路都沒有結果，最後終於得到Warner Bros. 的賞識，在1985年發行了首張專輯。
不可不提的是，重量級大團Pink Floyd的吉他手David Gilmour也擔任他們的製作人之一，
同時他和Nick也有著還不錯的私交，因此TDA(The Dream Academy)的三張專輯他都參與了製作工作。
而在發行了三張專輯之後，三人決定分道揚鑣，也都各自發行過專輯，
目前都還在流行樂壇從事幕前和幕後的工作。Nick的最新個人專輯也將在今年內發行。

● 來欣賞他們最知名的單曲： Life In A Northern Town
這首歌收錄在1985年樂團的首張同名專輯The Dream Academy當中。
當年好像譯為北城生活吧？
先來回味一下，這首Harmony曾經很喜歡的歌 --
真是令人懷念的音樂啊！
雖然這些樂器到如今早已大量被使用在流行音樂中，不足為奇，
但聽到雙簧管和定音鼓的聲音，還是不自覺的被吸引住.....
這首歌的MV其實有兩個版本，上面這個是流傳較廣的1985年版，
拍攝地點包含英國的Newcastle upon Tyne、 Manchester和美國Pittsburgh附近的兩個小鎮。
順便來欣賞一下，1984年的稀有版本 --
這個版本的拍攝地點則是在英國的Halifax附近。
● Life In A Northern Town背後的故事
The Dream Academy曾在接受訪問時表示，這首歌算是獻給已故民謠歌手Nick Drake的。

歌曲中的小鎮原型，則是英國第二大城 Birmingham(伯明罕)東南方的Tanworth-in-Arden，
這也是Nick Drake長眠之處。

Nick Drake是活躍在60年代末～70年初，一位充滿才情的民謠歌手，
卻飽受憂鬱症和長期失眠所苦，1974年他在家中因服用過量抗憂鬱的藥物過世，
至今仍無法確認他究竟是厭世自殺，還是誤用藥物所導致，當年的他才26歲。
Nick Drake生前並沒有享受到真正被大眾擁抱的滋味，
算是位非主流的歌手，
然而他的音樂卻深深的影響了幾十年來的音樂人，
許多人都曾表態受他影響甚深，
例如 Kate Bush、 Paul Weller，以及The Black Crowes等，
The Dream Academy則創作了這首向他致敬的暢銷曲，
他的傳記於1997年出版，紀錄片則在1998年發行；
到了2000年，福斯汽車採用了他的Pink Moon做為電視廣告歌曲，
廣告問世後一個月之間，
這首歌的銷售量便超越了他過去30年來專輯銷售的總數.....
可說是標準的死後成名，令人不勝欷噓啊！

● 翻唱/取樣的版本
雖然有不少歌手和樂團翻唱(尤其是一些鄉村樂團)，
但最有名的版本應該是舞曲團體Dario G1997年的Sunchyme(中譯為"太陽之歌")
這首歌不是全曲翻唱，而是取樣自其中的片段。
也因為這首Sunchyme，才讓不少年輕一輩認識了Life In A Northern Town。
